Stunned by criticism of inept city efforts to drain flood waters during a downpour two weeks ago, Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra quickly took to the social media yesterday to prove his workers were doing everything possible to deal with yesterday morning's deluge.
There were no jokes about moving to the mountains to avoid floods this time. It was all business.
The embattled governor posted photos of city officials cleaning up and draining canals and walkways in several districts across the city on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Sukhumbhand.P).
"Sorry for the inconvenience. We are doing our best to solve this problem," he wrote.
He provided updates of the storm's impact across the city, including inundation at Din Daeng, Asok, and in Phloenchit, as well as offering reports on where trees had been felled by the storm.
He said inundation is common low-lying areas of the city. However, the problem was aggravated in some areas by garbage clogging gutters and canals.

The governor updated his page every hour with photos of officials tackling the inundation by dredging gutters and canals.

Photos of staff removing the waste in Khlong Prawet also showed how the water flow had been blocked in the canal, causing inundation on the roads. After updating the situation as it eased across town, MR Sukhumbhand also thanked the people for supporting the BMA.
Drainage and Sewerage Department deputy chief Kangwan Deesuwan said rain fell at a rate of over 70 ml/hour in Taling Chan and about 66 ml/hour in the Phra Nakhon. Officials had been working to drain water in Saen Saep canal since early morning after the city had been warned of the storm. Traffic was not as heavy as it was during the storm two weeks ago, he said.
