POLICE CONDUCT
'Man roughhoused and handcuffed for filming police' ?
When police tackled a man and handcuffed him on the ground, it looked like police abuse to the locals in crowded Khlong Toei market in downtown Bangkok who filmed the incident on their mobile phones.
"Man roughhoused and handcuffed for filming police," they said, as video clips of rough treatment by the police went viral on the internet.
Not so, say the police.
The public were "not in full possession of the facts" following the incident near the Klong Toey market on Friday, according to Traffic police spokesman Sironwit Inthorn.
WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED?
The man, named Pramok Rortthiang, was drunk and disorderly and damaged property, damaging a mirror, the police said.
Police initially suspected the man of being an illegal immigrant.
Police claim that when the man was asked for his ID, he fled.
After police incapacitated the man in front of the big crowd, who were all filiming it on their mobile phones, the man was taken to Thong Lor police station.
When his documents were checked, he was found to be a Thai national not an illegal immigrant.
The man then apologised to the police.
WILL BE APOLOGIZING & EXPLAINING WHAT REALLY HAPPENED, POLICE SAY
A news conference was scheduled so that the man could formally tell the public explain what happened and "put the matter straight."
Hopefully, the news conference will sort out the facts which do not make sense.
Why did the police suspect the man of being an illegal immigrant when he clearly was not?
Why did the crowd say he was filming the police?
Which came first, filming the police or the police thinking he was an illegal immigrant?
Wasn't there a less violent way for the police to solve the problem?
MANY NETIZENS SKEPTICAL ABOUT POLICE STORY
Comments by netizens clearly indicate that many do not believe the police story.
Many seem to feel that the police may have been filmed doing something wrong.
Some say the man will be forced to say what the police demand him to say in the press conference.
However, dealing with the whole matter in this way does seem to be better than yet another costly criminal defamation suit.
