Mae Mo people reject doctor accused of molesting nurse

ASSAWIN WONGNORKAEW

LAMPANG – People in Mae Mo district have expressed their strong opposition to the transfer to their local hospital of a doctor accused of molesting a nurse at another hospital.

Suk Thaithanasukan, chairman of the Ban Dong Tambon Administration Organisation, and Somyong Mukaeokhruea, chair of Mae Mo people's council, led 10 young residents to Mae Mo Hospital on Wednesday night.

They announced their rejection of a doctor who was reportedly transferred there from Muang Pan Hospital in Muang Pan district.

The delegation held up paper signs bearing the message that Mae Mo people do not want treatment from a doctor with no ethics.

Mr Suk said the doctor in question was accused of molesting a nurse. This showed he was unethical, and the management of Mae Mo Hospital should listen to them. The people in Mae Mo already had enough problems, he said.

The doctor should be transferred out of Mae Mo hospital too, he said.

Executives of Mae Mo and Muang Pan hospitals have not talked publicly about the issue. It was reported that the doctor had taken leave immediately after his transfer, and might seek reassignment to his home province of Uthai Thani.

The Public Health Ministry launched a disciplinary investigation into the alleged molestation at Muang Pan Hospital in Muang Pan district on Feb 18. The incident was posted online. A blurred picture taken from surveillance camera footage showed a tall person trying to push a smaller person wearing a nurse-like uniform.

The CCTV picture was widely posted along with reports on nurse molestation by a doctor in Lampang province.

Local police said the nurse first complained about lewd behaviour. She later pressed wrongful detention charges as well, since the incident allegedly happened in the room of a doctor on duty. Police noted that the nurse had scratches on her left elbow and left wrist, and her upper lip was also swollen.

The nurse was quoted as saying her colleague held her by the wrists, kissed her on the lips, grabbed her breasts and squeezed her nipple. The doctor confessed to the offence, according to police.

Reports said the nurse managed to escape when someone called the doctor to attend a patient.

Public health authorities had since transferred the nurse to a hospital in Chiang Mai province at her request, because her family is there.

Both people are married. The doctor reportedly said he not had an affair with the nurse.
