Thailand has been officially certified free of the transmission of HIV and syphilis from mothers to their children.
Thailand is the first country in Asia and among the first in the world where the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV has fallen below 2 per cent.
Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is considered to be effectively eliminated for a country when the rate of transmission falls below 2%, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
Making this success sustainable, however, will remain a challenge and will require good leadership and management, as well as strong collaboration across sectors such as the healthcare sector and the private sector and the public sector (government).
DECADE OF SLOW BUT STEADY PROGRESS
Two decades ago, globally about one in three children whose mothers had HIV were born with HIV.
In Thailand over the last decade or so, there has been a huge decline in the mother-child HIV transmission rate from 10.3% in 2003 to 1.91% in 2015.
Thailand is the first country in Asia to achieve what was deemed an impossible milestone at that time - freeing infants of HIV as well as syphilis.
UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE THAT INCLUDES MIGRANT WORKERS IS KEY
“Thailand is one of only a few countries that have broadened universal healthcare to include migrant workers, making prevention of mother-to-child transmission affordable for everyone,” according to Dr Daniel Kertesz, WHO representative to Thailand.
