Trump a no-show as Republicans debate

To viewers abroad – and to many Americans – the process of electing the country's president is confusing. The campaign goes on for many months before the two main parties even start to choose their nominees in state-by-state primary elections.

The first primary election will be held on Monday in Iowa, and because it is the first, it gets a huge amount of attention. This year interest is even higher, especially on the Republican side, since two unusual candidates will find out how attractive they are to actual voters.

One, of course, is Donald Trump, a billionaire business man and a reality TV celebrity. The other is Ted Cruz, a US senator from Texas who has almost no support from Republican leaders, but his anti-government message seems to be popular among many ordinary Republicans.

The big attention-getter has been Donald Trump whose "Make America Great Again" campaign has featured tough talk and insults against anyone who openly opposes him.

Today, four days before the Iowa vote, Trump is again the centre of attention, boycotting a nationally- televised debate with the other Republican candidates and holding his own event to, he says, raise money for needy American military veterans.

He is refusing to attend the debate, he says, because its sponsor Fox News is biased against him, particularly female moderator Megyn Kelly, whose tough questions on his attitudes toward women angered him in a previous debate.

Will this hurt him or help him with voters? That is the big question political analysts are trying to answer tonight. We'll know for sure after Monday.
