Wat Phra Dhammakaya spent money embezzled from the Klongchan Credit Union Cooperative on the construction of upcountry temple branches targeting young people, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said Monday.
Pakorn Sucheewakul, who heads the DSI committee tracing 12 billion baht in embezzled funds from Thailand's biggest cooperative, said Wat Phra Dhammakaya monks questioned by the DSI said money received from cheques drawn on the cooperative had been spent on youth centres in outlying provinces.
The monks included Phra Wirat Toma, who initially admitted to the spending, Pol Lt Col Pakorn said.
Phra Wirat will meet DSI interrogators on April 7. The monk was the payee on more than five cheques worth about 70 million baht authorised by former Klongchan chairman Supachai Srisupa-aksorn, Pol Lt Col Pakorn said.
He sent DSI interrogators to Kanchanaburi province to gather information about a youth centre and other buildings owned by Wat Phra Dhammakaya there.
A source said on Monday that the wealthy temple spent the cooperative's money on expanding its branches to provinces. The funds were transferred to monks through cheques, and people under Mr Supachai's control actually moved it to other accounts.
Mr Supachai is a former treasurer of Wat Phra Dhammakaya based in Pathum Thani province.
