ASEAN checklist: Fake goods still easily available in AEC region

With the coming of the ASEAN Economic Community just months away, Singapore seems to be only member country that seriously cracks down on fake goods. Channel 3's ASEAN checklist team looks into the problem. (English & Thai)

ASEAN checklist appears each Wednesday on Channel 3 during the noontime segment of Asia Connect. How many of the items you have are genuine, and how many of them are bootleg or fakes?

They could be anything, from movies, watches, shoes, sunglasses to articles of clothing.

The ASEAN region is famous for easy availability of fake goods.

This was highlighted by Lady Gaga’s now legendary Tweet about buying fake Rolex watches in Thailand.

However, Thailand is not the only country in ASEAN, where people can buy fake branded items.

With the exception of Singapore, you can pretty much get fake branded goods in every city.

And even more so in the smaller towns and hamlets.

Which begs the question, “why are people inclined to buy these fake items?”

Well, to begin with, they’re perceived as prestigious goods available cheaply, and typically cost a fraction of the price of the genuine item.

True, but you can also easily buy non-branded items of equivalent quality for less than that of a fake.
