From poop to drinking water, Bill Gates drinks it to prove it is clean
In poor communities around the world, human waste gets into the drinking water causing disease & death, now a machine solves the problem by turning this waste into drinking water.
The well-known billionaire American philanthropist Bill Gates recently got a guided tour of a machine called the Omniprocessor, an ingenious machine which turns human waste (or poop) into clean water and electricity.
In places without good waste treatment plants, it could be a real game-changer in the future.
The machine was designed and built by the company Janicki Bioenergy.
In a video posted on his blog, Mr Gates watched as human waste was fed into the processor and then drank the water that came out at the other end of the machine as a result of processing that waste.
"The water tasted as good as any I've had out of a bottle. And having studied the engineering behind it, I would happily drink it every day. It's that safe," Bill Gates wrote.
The raw sewer sludge is first boiled and water vapour is then separated from the solid waste. Passing through a filtering and cleaning system, drinking water is produced for the local community.
The solid waste is then burned producing steam that is used to produce electricity from a steam engine that the small local community can use at a very low cost.
The machine also helps get rid of human waste and reduce the huge number of deaths of children worldwide each year from poor sanitation.
As Bill Gates wrote in his blog: "Because a shocking number of people, at least 2 billion, use latrines that aren’t properly drained. Others simply defecate out in the open. The waste contaminates drinking water for millions of people, with horrific consequences: Diseases caused by poor sanitation kill some 700,000 children every year, and they prevent many more from fully developing mentally and physically.
If we can develop safe, affordable ways to get rid of human waste, we can prevent many of those deaths and help more children grow up healthy."
A pilot project with the machine is scheduled for Senegal this year and India is the next country on Bill Gate's wish list.
"If we get it right, it will be a good example of how philanthropy can provide seed money that draws bright people to work on big problems, eventually creating a self-supporting industry. Our goal is to make the processors cheap enough that entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries will want to invest in them and then start profitable waste-treatment businesses," Bill Gates wrote.
The NGO WaterAid wrote that machines like this could "help to facilitate the need to complete the sanitation cycle, by creating a market for the creation of a sustainable services around the safe collection, transportation, treatment, disposal, and indeed reuse of human waste".
