Following Hurricane Sandy (updated)

High tide brings a huge storm surge into New York City.  Cars are seen floating in Lower Manhattan.

Tuesday morning: It's morning here and night has fallen on the east coast of the US. Now post-tropical storm Sandy has just made landfall, bringing heavy winds and very heavy coastal flooding. You can follow all this live on the internet.

Following Sandy

Monday, 9:00 pm One of the largest storms ever is hitting the East Coast of the United States at this moment. Hurricane Sandy is huge, covering hundreds of kilometres and its winds are likely to create huge waves that could flood major population centres like New York City.

We'll have much more on this in the morning, but you can start following the storm right now. The news coverage in the United States is non-stop and it is of the highest quality. I've just been watching live television from New York City and you can do the same. First, here are some of the words you are like to see and here:

Huricane Sandy is not just a storm, its being called a megastorm/monster storm.
The storm is said to be bearing down (ลุกลามมายัง)on the states located on the east coast
People are being told to brace for (เตรียมรับมือ) the impact (แรงกระแทก, ผลกระทบ) of the storm
Residents along the coast have been warned to evacuate/flee (อพยพออกจากพื้นที่).

Weather reports will talk about two types of winds, sustained (continuous ต่อเนื่อง) and gusts (ลมแรงที่พัดขึ้นอย่างกะทันหัน). When the storm hits the land, we say it makes landfall (การเข้าหาแผ่นดิน).

The biggest worry now is that the winds, together with the tides (กระแสน้ำขึ้นน้ำลง) will create a huge storm surge (น้ำทะเลหนุน), and overflow (ไหลล้น) coastal defences (การป้องกัน, การต้านการ).

Already, the high winds have toppled (คว่ำลงมา) trees and electrical poles, causing power outages (ช่วงเวลาที่ไม่มีกระแสไฟฟ้า)
