NAKHON RATCHASIMA : Five suspects have been arrested for alleged involvement in a scam allowing police force applicants to cheat in their exams.

Tueanjai Pongpan, 45, Thanakorn Wiset, 36, Sataporn Wiset, 37, Panyasak Nilpech, 30, and Somchai Saengthong, 49, all from Si Sa Ket, were arrested on Sunday in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The group was apprehended at a hotel in the province after one of the police applicants was searched and found to be carrying a short-wave radio. The device had been modified to receive vibrations indicating the answers to the multiple choice questions in the exam.

Documents with personal details of the applicants were also seized along with about 10.5 million baht cash and two radio signal receivers, police said.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Pitsanu Yuwarat, who served on the exam committee at Sukhanaree School, alerted other committees after he caught an applicant with a communication device hidden in his shoulder bag.

About 22 more such devices were found left at three exam sites in the province and 20 applicants suspected of involvement were detained.

Police say Mrs Tueanjai, who is a kindergarten teacher and a private tutor in Si Sa Ket, told them that she heard from a man who was offering to help applicants cheat in their exams.

She then spread the news to potential customers.

The applicants were each required to pay 350,000 baht in instalments to receive the cheating service, police said.

About 150 people had paid the gang for the test assistance, police said.

However, police said most of the applicants who allegedly confessed to having sought help from the gang were being treated as witnesses and had not been charged.

Pol Maj Gen Jakthip Holasutsakul, deputy chief of the Provincial Police Region 3, said the Royal Thai Police would decide whether to cancel and restart the entire annual police recruitment drive.

The Provincial Police Region 2 said another police exam-cheating gang found to be operating in Chon Buri on Sunday was probably part of the same network.

A total of 95 applicants suspected of cheating in the exam were detained in Chon Buri. A number of them were carrying similarly modified radios, said Pol Maj Gen Anan Jaroenchasri, deputy chief of the Provincial Police Region 2.

Any applicants who are found guilty of cheating in the exams would be permanently blacklisted from applying for positions in both the police force and civil service, he said.
