POST REPORTERS

Women's groups have urged the government to encourage male civil servants to exercise their right to paternity leave.

Male government officials are entitled to the 15-day leave under a Prime Minster's Office regulation which was published in the Royal Gazette on Jan 24, a Bangkok seminar by the Thai Breast-feeding Centre was told yesterday.

However, Sa-nga Damapong, head of the centre's communication project, said the regulation has not received much publicity so many male civil servants are unaware of their rights.

The labour law on maternity leave allows working women to take 90 days of paid leave.

Mr Sa-nga urged the government to raise government officials' awareness of their right to paternity leave as well as encourage the private sector to introduce male paternity leave.

Mr Sa-nga said executives of state agencies and those of private companies need to realise the importance of a father's role before and after birth.

It's not clear what these two little ones are talking about. Maybe it's something like this: Baby 1: "It sure is nice to have Dad home to help Mom." Baby 2: "Yeah, now I've two parents to play with." THITI WANNAMONTHA

Pareena Sriwanich, assistant rector of Chulalongkorn University, said paternity leave should be promoted to strengthen family ties, a key social value.

She said the university was among the first to issue a regulation in 2008 granting male staff paternity leave.

Kirakamol Chaibandit, of the Friends of Women Foundation, proposed that further steps be taken to ensure men are more involved in raising their kids.
