TRAT – Twenty-three Thai tourists, a boat driver and two boat attendants were rescued as their speedboat sank just off the eastern province Tuesday night on the way from Koh Kut to Laem Sok port in tambon Ao Yai of Muang district.

Their boat was swamped by big waves about three kilometres away from the Laem Sok landing. Victims managed to phone police for help as the boat sank.

The accident was reported at about 7.15pm. Soldiers, police, customs officials and rescue workers deployed their boats to save the victims, all of whom are Thai, from a stormy sea.

All were wearing life vests.

Survivors said the tour group included the wife of the Khlong Yai district chief.
