Pole dancing on Bangkok subway: Don't try it

Pole dancing on the Bangkok subway is now officially against the law, so be warned. Don't try it, even if  seized by a momentary whim.

Executing gymnastic moves with the subway hand straps, then jumping up on the pole, sliding and twirling down the pole striking a pose with outstretched arms, she performed without music and only for the distance between two MRT subway stations.

Her audience consisted of an almost empty subway car.

Her pole dancing and gymnastics appeared very skilful with some netizens speculating that she had acquired these skills as a so-called "professional dancer."

But the initial reaction to her impromptu performance was not promising, as she observed, "everyone in the train looked at me like 'Why the hell is she dancing?' LOL. When I sat down again, nobody dared looking at me or said a word."

After the performance was posted to YouTube, it quickly went viral and was featured on Thailand's top news shows, notably Sorayuth on Channel 3.

MRT mass transit authorities quickly announced that this sort of activity is dangerous and illegal and is considering prosecuting the woman.

It is worth noting, however, that "pole dancing," once only practiced by professional go go or coyote dancers in Patpong or Soi Cowboy bars has now attained the status of a gymnastic sport and form of exercise (not unlike aerobics) with several international competitions and certified training programs.

Who knows, maybe one day pole dancing may become an Olympic sport.
