Giant panda accused of faking pregnancy
The whole world was waiting eagerly for the first ever live broadcast of a panda giving birth when the giant panda Ai Hin began showing signs of pregnancy at the Chengdu Breeding Research Centre in China.
The event unfortunately had to be cancelled.
It turns out that panda mother was actually faking pregnancy in order to receive more buns, fruits and bamboo.
When Pandas are thought to be pregnant in China they receive many extra special things including 24-hour care, extra food and a special air-conditioned single room as well as more buns, fruits and bamboo from their keepers, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life.
Panda bears have been known to display signs of being pregnant after becoming aware of the preferential treatment in what is known as a "phantom pregnancy". Signs of pregnancy include a decreased activity level, a lack of appetite and heightened hormone levels.
Giant pandas often have difficult pregnancies and only 24 percent of female pandas in captivity give birth.
On a happier note, the 12-year-old giant panda Ju Xiao recently gave birth to three little cubs, the first Panda triplets known to survive.
