Troops put on poison alert

POST REPORTERS

The army has told its troops to be on the alert for poisoned drinks after soldiers were handed drinks laced with chemicals on Monday.

An unidentified person handed a bottle of green tea to a soldier from the 9th Infantry Division who was manning a checkpoint on Rama II Road in Thon Buri about 11pm.

The soldier reported that he decided against drinking from the bottle after he discovered that the liquid inside appeared to be thick and sticky.

A further examination showed the drink had been mixed with chemicals which had been injected into the bottle with a syringe.

A needle hole on the bottle had been carefully sealed with hot glue to prevent the contents from leaking.

Maj Gen Pairote Thongma-eng, commander of the 9th Infantry Division, who confirmed the incident, said soldiers of the 31st Infantry Regiment also experienced a similar incident.

Troops had been given fake energy drinks, he said, without elaborating further.

First Army Region Commander Teerachai Nakwanich, said he had warned soldiers to be more careful when accepting food and beverages from the public while on patrol.
