Female dog not in the mood to mate? Male dog not skilled at mating? Time for Uncle Maew and his professional services.

Ratas Pothinang, 57, has had several careers in his time. But he's happiest and making the most money with his current work: mating dogs.

The native of Khon Kaen province learned about dogs as a boy from his grandfather. As a teenager, he came to Bangkok and helped dog traders at the Sanam Luang weekend market mate pets in return for food.

"In 1985 I got my first payment - 500 baht - for mating dogs," recalled Mr Ratas, whose name Lung (uncle) Maew has become well known among dog lovers.

He quit his job at the Port Authority of Thailand two decades ago to focus on dog mating services.

"I think this job will never dry up," says Mr Ratas. "Many people have dogs and the number of pet owners seems to be rising."

He mates about five dog couples a day on average, seven days a week. Service including delivery costs 800 baht, or 600 baht for clients who take the pet to his house.

Mr Ratas has even driven to Rayong, Trat, Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan to provide his services, which cost between 2,000 to 4,000 baht for a road trip.

Dog owners sometimes ship the pet by air for Mr Ratas to mate and rest at his house in Bangkok before taking the flight back home.

"I think I'm the luckiest guy in the world because I love my job and all dogs," he says.

Some dogs are priced at millions of baht, meaning normally their owners would never let you touch them. But I have touched them all.

His frequent customers include millionaires, movie stars and other celebrities. Asked why dog owners require his service, Mr Ratas says that often females are not in the mood to mate, or some males are not skilled at mating. Owners require his professional skills to facilitate smooth affairs.

"This is a sort of love they [bitches] cannot choose for themselves," he joked, but noted his service is not animal torture. "Animals need to mate and my job is to make it easier for them so they are not as tired."

"Owners of female dogs normally chose the groom but sometimes they ask for recommendations. "I recommend a few of my clients' dogs, then they check them out and pick one," he explains.

Usually dogs older than 15 months are ready to mate.

Chow Chows and Pomeranians are considered the toughest to deal with, in Mr Ratas's experience.

Sometimes, if females are frustrated or not willing to mate, they might resist and bite us," he says, explaining why a rope and long pants are among the tools of the trade.

Patcharin Polsiri, an owner of Dimmer's Husky Kennel in Bangkok, is a frequent customer of Mr Ratas because he can guarantee the results.

"Some dog handlers offer the same service but I think Lung Maew is much more professional and reliable," she said.

Dog mating services help protect imported male dogs from tiring so much during mating that they don't impregnate the bitch, said Ms Patcharin.

Imported dogs are normally kept in an air-conditioned room and taken outside to mate, which normally takes no more than 10 minutes at a time.

Chow Chow - a breed of dog developed in China where it is known as the "puffy-lion dog": a sturdily built dog, square in profile, with a broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears, rounded at the tips. The breed has a very dense double coat that can be either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane appearance.
