Moving along the Education 4.0 road map, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) aims to be Thailand's first digital university by 2019.

The university on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with China-based ICT vendor Huawei Technology and G-ABLE, a systems integrator, on an exchange of technological knowledge and innovation.

The items under the three-year milestone partnership include a 100-gigabit campus core network, 3,000 WiFi access points, an educational cloud data centre and a software-defined network.

KMITL president Suchatvee Suwansawat said the move is part of the university's five-year path to be a "digital university", a place where skilled graduates are prepared for changes in the future.

KMITL will be Thailand's first university network that will offer a super high-speed data transmission of up to 100Gbps to its 10,000 students. The new infrastructure network will digitise the university to adhere to current trends in universities worldwide, Mr Suchatvee said.

The upgraded campus network is built in line with the goal to apply the concept of "Education 4.0" into reality, and increase connectivity for students, lecturers and staff.

In the future, KMITL plans to offer total online courses so its students, and students at KMITL's partnered universities, or agencies cooperating with KMITL can remotely attend classes from wherever internet is available in the world.

Huawei Enterprise Business Group in Southeast Asia president Zhang Lin noted that students, school personnel and society as a whole have been tremendously and rapidly transformed with the actualisation of online learning, allowing modern day students, particularly in universities, to study whenever and wherever they like as long as they can access learning sources.

"Classes today do not have to take place in classrooms – a back-end and centralised university network can significantly yield fruitful learning opportunities and simultaneously reduce the university's daily operation cost," Mr Zhang said.

Neither of the companies, nor KMITL divulged the investment value.
