Rejected boy goes berserk, punches, kicks, slaps girl

After a young man asks a girl for her phone number and is rejected, he goes berserk.

The rejection quickly escalates into a war of words. He kicks her, punches her, slaps her, throws the fish sauce bottle on the table at her, and then turns on her friend and lashes out at her.

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED?

On Saturday evening on the island of Koh Samui in a rice porridge (juk) restaurant located in the beach town of Bor Phut.

A young man approached an attractive young women and asked her for her phone number.

DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I AM THE SON OF POLICEMAN XXXXXX...

The woman refused to give him her phone number.

After he was rejected, he allegedly declared: "Do you know who I am? I am the son of sergeant......"

What he hoped to achieve by throwing out the name of someone well-known on Koh Samui, an influential figure, is anyone's guess.

THE BRAWL ESCALATES

Heated words were exchanged, push came to shove with the woman's friend standing in front of her to protect her from the man who was trying to slap and punch her.

Finally, the man picks an object up from the table and throws it at the woman.

Sh, in turn, throws a bottle of what looks like fish sauce at him and the brawl quickly escalates.

The man punches, slaps and kicks the woman and then goes after her with the little basket of condiments sitting on the table, going after the other girl also.

The whole incident was recorded on CCTV footage and quickly went viral after being posted to the internet for all to see.

POLICE ACTING AS JUDGE MAKES CASH SETTLEMENT OF 10,000 BAHT FOR VICTIM

The two young women went to the local police station and made a complaint.

The police tracked down the young man.

The matter was discussed and a settlement was reached.

The woman accepted a 10,000 baht in compensation and the payment of a fine, in exchange for dropping criminal charges.

The young woman cited her having a foreign boyfriend as her reason for not pursuing criminal charges.

JUST A DEPARTMENT STORE EMPLOYEE, NOT A POLICEMAN'S SON

It turned out that the young man was an employee at a local department store, not the son of a police officer.

If he was, whether this would have helped him avoid punishment with impunity, is an interesting speculative question to consider.

Perhaps, he imagined himself to be a police man's son or perhaps the young women misunderstood him or imagined him as saying that in the heat of the argument.

He claimed that he never said that he was a policeman's son and that it was just fake news created in social media.

ANALYSIS: PRIVATE LAW OR PUBLIC LAW?

In some places the young man would be in jail on criminal assault charges.

The state would have pursued the case on behalf of the public to which the violent young man continues to be an obvious threat.

But after paying a relatively small fine, he's on the street again and might do it again.

Thailand's informal legal system, allows the police to act as judges and settle some disputes for cash (especially traffic accidents) so that they never land in court.

This perhaps saves money and does place priority on the victim hurt by criminal acts, but does it really deter people from assaulting people again in the future?
