Monk-beater: Van driver fined after viral fight
After fighting with a monk, a van driver named Pallop Prasert, 35, and his wife Srisombat, 38, who worked with him, have been fined 5,000 each.
The incident took place In the provincial town of Roi-Et.
Monks are treated with great respect according to Thai traditions and culture, so the incident was shocking and appalling to many Thais.
On the other hand, from the video that circulated online it did appear that it was the monk , not the van driver, who threw the first punch and started the fight.
Since it was a monk though, the appropriate response would perhaps have been to avoid the conflict entirely by either walking away or running away.
Others said the monk got what was coming to him (just deserts).
POLICE INVESTIGATION
Staff at the transport company where the incident took place were called in to explain to the police what had happened.
The driver admitted that he had fought with the monk.
The monk had spat on the floor and complained continually about the price of the ticket.
MONK PUNCHES WIFE AFTER BEING ASKED TO LEAVE VAN
Finally, the driver asked the monk to leave the van.
This started an argument that developed into a fight when the monk punched his wife, the van driver said.
Both the husband and wife were ordered to attend training.
The driver was fined 5,000 baht for being impolite and fighting with a passenger.
The wife of the driver was fined 5,000 baht for not having a license to work in the van.
The operator of the van service was fined a whopping 40,000 baht for not training their staff properly.
In response, the company has cancelled that van service indefinitely.
