For the first time since 2013 Samsung is not offering a new version of its flagship product the Galaxy S smartphone this year.
Samsung is, however, offering two new tablets this year.
The presentation of new Samsung products took place at the annual Mobile World Congress, an industry event that showcases new mobile technology.
Samsung's deviation from their usual practice of unveiling a new Galaxy S smartphone follows a major technical problem with the company's Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone that led to product recalls and eventually a complete withdrawal of the product from the market.
The critical problem was that the phone sometimes caught fire due to faulty batteries (see here).
TWO NEW GALAXY BOOK TABLETS
The cheaper Galaxy Tab S3 tablet running the Android 7.0 Nougatis operating system (OS) and is smaller of the two tablets offered this year with a 24.6 centimeter (cm) screen. Gaming and video playback are its targeted uses.
The high-end Galaxy Book tablet runs the Windows 10 operating system and has two sizes 10.6 and 12 inches. A snap-on keyboard and stylus are included
The boundary between large smartphones (phablets) and tablet computers has blurred in recent years leading to a decline in tablet sales.
Samsung's high-definition (HD) screen, based on an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology, is said to give the company a competitive advantage.
VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET
Samsung also introduced a new virtual reality (VR) headset with a remote control called Gear VR that operates with Galaxy S and Note handsets.
The headset is designed to operate with Facebook's Oculus.
The remote control operates by one-handed control.
Motion sensors are able to detect hand movements just like Google's rival Daydream View VR headset which has a built-in motion-sensing controller.
Options in VR apps can be selected with a touchpad.
