CHON BURI – A glass roof collapsed on top of diners sitting in a popular restaurant at Wonnapa beach late on Monday night, injuring 10 of them.

The accident occurred around 10pm at Soul Restaurant in tambon Saensuk, Muang district.

The injured customers – six men, three women and a girl – were given first aid by a rescue unit called to the scene, and then sent to a nearby hospital.

Police said a metal beam fell onto the glass roof above the front section of the two-storey restaurant. It shattered, and the broken glass and debris rained down on the tables, chairs and diners below.

Peerapat Chansela, 27, a visitor from Khon Kaen who sustained head and arm injuries, said it had been raining heavily. There were about 20 customers in the restaurant .

The restaurant owner, Natthaphum Arpamongkol, 45,  confirmed the roof collapsed during a heavy downpour and strong wind, which had toppled a metal beam on to it. The restaurant would take responsibility for all medical expenses of the injured.

Pol Capt Waris Butthichak, a duty officer at Saensuk police station and Narongchai Khunpluem, mayor of Saensuk municipality, inspected the scene shortly after the incident.

Mr Narongchai said the municipality would send architectural engineers to examine the restaurant and see whether the collapsed section had been unlawfully modified.
