Applicants for driving licences will have to sit long hours for the driving theory tests starting Wednesday as part of a Land Transport Department plan to improve road safety.
The department started requiring people seeking a new drivers licence or renewing those that have expired for more than one year to take two more tests starting from Wednesday.
NEW EXAMS: FIRST-AID & EMERGENCY SKILLS & DRIVING LAWS
One of the new exams involves first-aid knowledge and the skills needed to deal with road emergencies.
The other new exam focuses on laws related to driving, including the land transport and highways acts.
Exam-takers will be given five hours to complete all the tests, up from four hours before the new theory tests were added.
PART OF NEW CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE ROAD ACCIDENTS
The new exam and driver's education curriculum is part of the 'Sure driving, smart driver' campaign.
The goal of the campaign is to ensure that drivers have better skills and hopefully reduce the number of road accidents in the country.
This is according to Land Transport Department director-general Sanit Promwong.
NOT THE FIRST TIME TOUGHER WRITTEN EXAMS TRIED
The last time the department changed the rules reagarding driver's education and drivers license exams was in 2015.
Applicants were required to sit a new multiple-choice test with more questions and they had to get 90% of the answers correct to pass the test, up from 75% previously.
No indication was given as to whether these tougher tests have had any effect on the number of road accidents in the country.
Some contend that stricter enforcement of traffic laws (or at least some enforcement where there is no enforcement) is the key ingredient needed for safer driving and reduced road accidents.
Some also contend that tests of practical skills used when actually driving a vehicle might be a better way to reduce road accidents.
