Three provinces -- Yasothon, Kalasin and Pathum Thani -- have been declared temporary rabies-hit zones.

Seven people died of rabies between Jan 1 and Aug 7 this year.

Two were reported in Chachoengsao; the others in Tak, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Songkhla and Si Sa Ket, according to the Bureau of Epidemiology.

An investigation is underway into the recent deaths of two men in Pathum Thani who were believed to have contracted rabies.

Just one of the men was confirmed to have been bitten by a dog.

Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said Thursday it had not been established both men who died this week had contracted rabies.

CONFIRMED RABIES CASE

Dr Piyasakol said it was reported Thaweesak Sapyut, 23, had suffered from Japanese encephalitis-like symptoms before his death.

A team from the Disease Control Department was dispatched to look into the issue to confirm whether rabies caused his death, he added.

Dr Piyasakol's comments came after news of the death of Thaweesak and another man, a motorcycle taxi driver, went viral on social media this week.

Thaweesak's mother denied her son died of rabies as he had never been bitten by a dog.

Her son was admitted to Thanyaburi Hospital on Sept 2 with a high fever.

He was later transferred to Pathum Thani Hospital and was pronounced dead on Tuesday after being diagnosed as having an infection.

His body was sent to Thammasat University Hospital for an autopsy.

The motorcycle taxi driver died after being treated for rabies at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok.

This was confirmed by Dr Thiravat Hemachudha, chief of the Thai Red Cross Society's emerging infectious disease centre.

DECEASED REGULARLY FED STRAY DOGS

Dr Thiravat said the deceased, who regularly fed stray dogs, had been bitten and developed rabies symptoms about five weeks before he was treated for the disease.
