Originally a very successful businessman in the construction industry, he entered politics in 1976, joining the Chart Thai Party of Pramarn Adireksan and former prime minister Chatichai Choonhavan. He later headed that party for many years until it was dissolved by the Constitutional Court in 2008. The Chartthaipattana Party was then formed to replace it.
