The Criminal Court on Monday sentenced well-known TV news anchor Sorayuth Suthassanachina to 13 years and four months in jail.

BRIBE TO CONCEAL FEES OWED

The jail sentence was handed down for bribing a former employee of state-run media company MCOT to fraudulently conceal a 138-million-baht fee his firm owed MCOT.

Two directors of his firm, Rai Som Co, received the same sentence - Angkhana Watthanamongkholsilp and Sukanya sae Lim - and a staff member, Montha Theeradet.

The court heard that from February 2005 to April 2006 Sorayuth's company bribed an MCOT employee,  Pichapa Iamsa-ard.

PAID NOT TO REPORT TV COMMERCIALS IN EXCESS OF CONTRACT

The MCOT employee was paid more than 700,000 baht to not report to MCOT management TV commercials in excess of contracted advertising times on Sorayuth's Khui Khui Khao news programme on MCOT’s Modernnine TV channel.

This action enabled Sorayuth's company Rai Som to withhold advertising revenue totalling 138 million baht that was due MCOT as its share.

SENTENCE IN ABSENTIA

The defendant Mrs Pichapa remains at large.

The Criminal Court sentenced her to 20 years in prison in absentia.

Mr Sorayuth was present in court for the reading of the judgement.

His lawyers were applying for release on bail for all defendants pending appeal.
