A pub in Pattaya faces a five-year shut down after local authorities and police caught staff serving 75 underage customers in a before dawn (predawn) raid yesterday.

At 4.30am in the morning, as police approached the Route 99 pub in Central Pattaya, lights in the pub were quickly turned off and front doors locked when staff became aware that a police raid on the pub was in progress, but the police managed to enter the pub through the rear exit.

Police found 75 underage customers among 300 people in the pub, the youngest just 14 years-old.

The Route 99 pub was reported to hold parties every Wednesday night and lets teenagers in for 100 baht per head.

Of the underage customers, 24 tested positive for drug usage.

A small packet of crystal methamphetamine and one pack of ketamine were found abandoned on the floor.

The pub operator Kittipong Meeboonmak, 40, was held and charged.

The parents of the underage pub-goers were called to the district office for a lecture on their duties as parents.

Underage customers found to have taken drugs where sent to a juvenile detention centre.

Those who passed a drug test were released and sent home.

Chon Buri governor Khomsan Ekachai will be asked to order a five-year closure of the pub for violating restrictions on alcohol sales.

The pub was also found to be operating without a business licence and operating outside of legal operating hours.
