UPDATE

Bomb toll revised: 20 dead, 125 injured

Police on Tuesday morning revised the death toll from Monday night's Erawan Shrine bombing to 20 including two Chinese and one Filipino. A spokesman said 125 people were injured and sought medical help.

There are many people still in hospital whose nationality we can't be determined. They remain incapacitated and were not carrying any form of identification at the time of the incident.

The youngest patient is a 5-year-old Chinese national who suffered head injuries. Some patients have been discharged but those suffering from trauma or burns remain in hospital.

SUSPECTS

Authorities have checked footage from 15 CCTV cameras in the area and saw what they consider to be suspects who may have placed the bomb. Their identities were still unknown.

There was wide sharing on social media of a report about "a white foreigner" who arrived in a tuk-tuk carrying a rucksack, and then was seen without it. Later the bomb went off.

Police have swept the streets in the Ratchaprasong area looking for possible evidence. The intersection remained closed, causing traffic jams in the area, but was expected to reopen about noon on Tuesday.

The bomb blew debris and shrapnel up to 100 metres from site of the explosion.

The hotline 1599 is open for the public to contribute photos or videos taken around the area before or soon after the bomb explosion, to help authorities reconstruct the crime.

Ball bearings possibly packed  with the explosive as shrapnel were found in the explosion area. They were six millimetres in diameter, the same size as those found at the scene of the botched bomb explosion set off by Iranian suspects on Sukhumvit 71, Bangkok, in February 2012.

Scores killed, hurt as bomb blast rocks Bangkok tourist attraction

An bomb explosion near Bangkok’s popular Erawan Shrine left at least 15 dead and more than 80 injured Monday.

A bomb fastened to a utility pole in front of the Erawan shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection detonated around 7.10pm. A second device was found and was being deactivated by the bomb squad at 8pm.

Several motorcycles were travelling through the junction at the time and the smoking wreckage was scattered across the area afterward.

Police chief Pol Gen Somyot Pumpunmuang and military officers were at the scene. Police already have recovered an electronic circuit suspected to be part of the device about 30 metres from the blast scene.

Photos and videos at the scene showed at least six bodies covered in white sheets with ambulances taking numerous others away with injuries. Reuters reported 30 people were reported injured at 7.40pm

The iron fence surrounding the shrine was bent outward by the force of the blast.

The skywalk near the Ratchprasong intersection has been closed, but the BTS Skytrain remained operational as normal.

Video purported to be CCTV footage of the blast was posted on Facebook after 8pm.
