A Japanese TV reporter who became a social media star while covering the anti-government protests in Bangkok last year has been named a tourism ambassador to Thailand.
The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) said that Daijiro Enami, 29, would serve as the "Thailand Visit Japan Ambassador" to help increase the number of Thai visitors to Japan.
Thai arrivals to the country have risen sharply since Tokyo started granting visa exemptions in July 2013. According to the JNTO, the number of Thai visitors jumped from 260,640 in 2012 to 657,570 last year. Thailand is now the fifth largest source of visitors after South Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
After becoming famous in Thailand, Enami found himself on numerous Thai TV programmes covering his life in Japan, and was invited to join several Japanese tourism events in Thailand.
The six-footer's clean-cut good looks even moved one commentator writing in the Bangkok Post to describe him as "gorgeous".
Enami also co-hosts Beauty Versus, a variety show in which young Thai and Japanese women share makeup tips. It is broadcast on Channel 7 in Thailand.
"This is my sixth visit to Thailand and I am impressed with Thais' fondness for Japanese culture," said Enami, a Tokyo native and Keio University graduate whose favorite Thai dish is som tam.
"As Japan's tourism ambassador, I will try my best to promote Japan tourism and unseen destinations in Japan to Thai people such as Mt Takao in Tokyo where visitors can enjoy natural beauty."
Enami said he would continue his journalism work in Japan while travelling back and forth between the two countries.

Young women were especially interested in snapping a selfie with the instant celebrity reporter.
Even guys wanted to get a selfie with the famous reporter.
Then the selfie session started to spiral out of control with selfies that looked more like a photo bomb than a selfie.
And the famous reporter decided enough was enough.
