Actress Anna Reese charged over fatal accident

Thai-English actress Anna Reese turned herself in to Prawet police station at 1.30pm on Friday to hear charges of reckless driving causing death and fleeing the scene of an accident, following a crash early on Friday morning.

The 28-year-old actress-cum-model, whose real name is Anna Hambawaris, was driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan that collided with a parked police car on a road alongside the motorway in Prawet area about 3am on Friday, killing the policeman asleep inside the car.

She said during a press interview that she had not been driving under the influence of alcohol, as some reports had suggested.

She said a motorcycle cut in front of her sedan while she was travelling at about 100 kph, causing her to lose control of the vehicle, which then ran into the parked police car.

She immediately got out of her car to check on the other vehicle, and was shocked to see a dead man inside the car.  She then contacted her relatives over the phone to tell them what had happened.

They rushed to the scene, found she had injured her left arm, and drove her to their house. After her injury was treated she contacted police to surrender.

"I feel sorry for what happened and I am willing to help the family of the victim.  Once the case has been finalised I want to go into meditation to calm my mind.

"I want to tell other motorists to take extra care... I want my case to serve as a reminder for other people," she said tearfully.

After interrogation, the actress was taken to Sirindhorn Hospital for a medical examination.

Initial tests revealed no trace of illegal drugs in her body. Results of tests for alcohol in her blood would be known in seven days, police said.

Actress Anna Reese was at the wheel of a Mercedes that crashed into a parked police car, killing a Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police officer, on the motorway in Bangkok’s Prawet district on Friday morning, reports said.

The police car was parked in the left lane of the motorway of the road that parallels the motorway, and the officer was believed to have been asleep. The accident occurred about 6.25am, police said.

Police and rescue workers called to the accident at kilometre marker 1 on the motorway about 6.25 am and found the body of the policeman in a badly damaged traffic police car with a Suphan Buri licence plate.

The dead officer was identified as Pol Lt Naradol Wongbundit, a deputy police chief of Suphan Buri’s Muang district police station.

A black Mercedes-Benz with a Bangkok licence plate and a damaged front end was parked 10 metres away. The driver, actress Anna Reese, 28, was found crying and screaming at the scene, police said.

MERCEDES & BIG BIKE RACING

Thassanapong Ponpho, 19, a guard at a car showroom near the crash scene, told police he saw the Mercedes and a big bike travelling at high speed, as if they were racing. The motorcycle reduced speed and then he heard a loud crash, Thai media reported.

He immediately went to see and found the sedan had hit the parked police car. The big bike had gone.

Pol Maj Somchai Saraket, a duty officer at Prawet police station, said the dead officer parked the car in the left lane late Thursday night and had slept in it.

Police have yet to press any charges. The actress sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. She was to give a statement to police this afternoon, after receiving treatment.
