Electric bus route opens: First for Bangkok

Electric bus route opens in Bangkok: Pilot test for future expansion

An electric bus route was opened yesterday that runs between the Ladkrabang station of the Airport Link and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL)

The pilot project was developed by KMITL working with the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA). Both signed an agreement on May 19th to expand the initiative and work together in the future.

The prototype bus may replace BMTA city buses in the future. The electric bus can travel as far as 250 kilometers on a single charge, reach a top speed of 70 kmph and requires 4-5 hours to fully charge.

The bus comes equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) for commuters to track its location and more efficiently manage their use of mass transit. The buses also have ramps for wheelchair users. 

There are over 3,000 buses operating in Bangkok. Replacing them with electric buses would reduce diesel fuel consumption by 120 million liters per year and reduce carbon emissions by 0.32 million tons per year.
