A number of leading red shirts including former fugitive Arisman Pongruangrong and controversial former Pheu Thai MP Worachai Hemma have been sentenced to four years in prison for inciting protesters to storm the Asean summit in Pattaya in 2009.

The Pattaya Court ruled on Wednesday to jail the 15 defendants, all members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, with no suspension of their terms.

Mr Singthong Buachum, one of the defendants and a Pheu Thai member, said the party was handling bail applications for those convicted in the case.

All of them intend to appeal against the ruling, Mr Singthong said.

The UDD protesters were rallying against the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration at the summit on April 11 that year.

About 2,000 protesters, led by Pheu Thai Party member Arisman, a red-shirt co-leader, broke through tight police barricades surrounding the summit venue at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, demanding then-prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva step down.

The rally forced authorities to abruptly cancel the summit to protect delegates who were hastily evacuated from the venue.

Some dignitaries had to be evacuated by helicopter or boat.

Others had their planes turn around in mid-flight or left immediately upon landing on Thai soil.

The summit was later held in June in Phuket where a strong military force guarded the meeting venue to ensure tight security.
