Jeremy is not happy.
It appeared to be an old-fashioned denial-of-service attack by a group calling themselves "Lizard Squad". They bombarded both networks with useless traffic which, together with the holiday demand from ordinary subscribers, was more than the systems could handle.
The hackers demanded, not money, but thousands of retweets of a message posted to the Lizard Squad twitter account – which has since been suspended.
Microsoft, we have a problem.
After coping with queries and complaints from bewildered and angry subscribers all day, the support services of both networks now say online gaming has resumed. Judging from twitter messages from subscribers, however, things are not completely back to normal.
