Flame-shooting alien spider to descend on Bangkok

The Arcadia Spectacular’s Spider stage will arrive in Bangkok for a one-night show, on Nov 29 at 7pm.

Presented by Memotion Co and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, “Gravity Thailand 2014 Presents Arcadia — The Bangkok Landing” will see the large parking lot in front of Siam Park City (Suan Siam) transformed into a landing platform for a high-octane dance party, with a colossal, spider-like alien creature as the main stage.

Arcadia’s largest and most radical structure, the Spider is a 360-degree, interactive stage, with a DJ booth suspended above the dance floor.

This stage is also armed with lasers, giant jets of CO2 and fire cannons that shoot flames 15m into the air, sending shock waves through the crowd. Stationed alongside the Spider stage will be the “Lords of Lighting”, two men in chain mail suits, harnessing 4 million volts of raw electricity between them.

Dozens of local and international DJs are slated to perform, starting at 4.30pm.

Siam Park City is on the outskirts of Bankgok, in Kannayao district.

Tickets cost 2,500 and 3,500 baht and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major

Arcadia Spectacular co-founder Pip Rush Jansen shares with us some stories behind the massive spider.

HOW DID THE IDEA OF THE SPIDER COME ABOUT?

It was a mad idea one morning at a festival in Ireland. We decided that standard stages were too boring and the visuals didn’t complement the music enough. So we set out to make something new and interactive that ignites all the senses.

WHY A SPIDER INSTEAD OF OTHER SHAPES OR FORMS?

Insects are fascinating. It’s almost like they’re from another planet. In fact, maybe they actually are.

HOW DID IT COME TOGETHER?

It took a few years to develop it bit by bit. We toured the country by motorbike to search every military scrapyard until we found the right bits.

BY USING ABANDONED MILITARY HARDWARE TO MAKE THE STAGE AND OTHER INSTALLATIONS, IS ARCADIA IN A WAY STRESSING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS APPROACH?

Well, we are all aware of the high demand for materials and minerals with so many of us in the world these days. It’s the real root of most wars and we all know that it is struggling to sustain us all. We don’t mean to preach about how everyone should behave or state that we have the answers, but we do like to be resourceful with the materials we use and to show what can be done with a little imagination. We also like the fact that the military scrap we use once had a life and purpose of death and destruction and now it serves as a machine that creates peace and unity. That rocks, in our opinion.

HOW IS ARCADIA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MUSIC FESTIVALS?

The flamethrower is pretty mental and unique compared to anything I’ve experience before. As is the tesla coil and the way it makes your hairs stand up on end. The relationship between the crane drivers, the aerialists and the flamethrower operators is pretty amazing. It has taken them years to develop the skills and trust to be able to do the mental tricks and explosions they do in time to the music. [The DJ line-up is also] a mixture and usually tailored to the local audience.

WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING INVOLVED WITH ARCADIA?

Watching people letting loose and creating the energy on the dance floor.

ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT ARCADIA (AND THE SPIDER) LEAVING THE UK FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Can’t wait! We love Thailand and have had some great parties there and can’t believe we’re bringing the spider. It’s set to be a big moment in dance music history.
