Learning Thai: Gen. Prayuth, the public speaker

The speaking style of NCPO chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has caught people's attention. He can be stern, as you would expect from a military man, but he also can be funny. Here is an example. (English translation included.)

Learning Thai: Gen. Prayuth, the public speaker

National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha definitely has his own speaking style. Even though his speeches can run an hour or more, he rarely uses a script. He speaks informally in a straightforward, rather stern, manner, but he keeps his audience's attention by mixing in humour.

Here is an example of the lighter side of General Prayuth. This short video clip comes just after the one-hour mark of a speech at a recent forum at the Royal Thai Army Club in which he outlined what he calls "the roadmap for Thailand reform".

That day, a newspaper, which one I don’t know, wrote “Let’s see which colour cat the NCPO will be – or a dog!” Hey, when I read that, I got angry! I don’t know what that means! This kind of speech, sometimes you can't use it!. It seems like it lacks respect. I don’t understand. And then you say I’ve obstructed your work. I haven’t, but I just asked you to write in a more polite manner. That’s all!

I can’t resist (saying that)! Now I may be criticised again in return. Well, well! I’m used to that now!

So, today, the course of reform, you probably understand what I've been talking about every day. I have talked (about reform) nine times on Fridays, which may have disturbed some people’s time to some extent. But today I see I’ve got people willing to listen, just the same.

I’ve seen some fault-finding. Instead of listening to the meaning of what I said, (that person) commented on my appearance, Today, I don’t look natural. My collar isn’t as neat as my last appearance.

I’m not a star. I am what I am, like this. Expecting me to be polite and neat, no, not me. I’m a soldier! I have to be quick and fast;  Otherwise the work won’t get done. The time is also limited!
