CHIANG MAI – Three people have died from eating poisonous mushrooms since the start of the rainy season, with the latest incident occurring last week involving three members of a family who consumed the mushroom. The mother and daughter died while the father is still in coma.
The family, from tambon Sri Dong Yen in Chai Prakan district, ate a mushroom known as “hed rangok” (Death Cap, Amanita phalloides) last week. Over the next day, all felt queasy and vomitted, and suffered diarrhea and severe convulsions.
Dr Surasing of the public health department said the mushroom, which is similar to a non-poisonous mushroom, had quickly destroyed their kidney and liver systems within 24 hours, leading to death.
Chiang Mai’s public health office said three other people had died from poisonous mushrooms and 21 had fallen sick since the beginning of the rainy season.
He warned villagers in risky areas in Omkoi, Chai Prakan and Mae Chaem districts to be careful and avoid eating unknown mushrooms because many of the poisonous varieties looked similar to edible ones.
