The World Cup in Brazil will have stories like this one every day. Learn to read them in English as well as Thai in "World Cup English". (In stores this weekend.)

World Cup stories have already begun and this is a great time to prepare yourself for following the competition in both yoru own language and in English. At the moment, the stories are focusing on the various team's preparations for the matches in Brazil and one concern is injuries to key players like Luiz Suarez.

As my book "World Cup English" says:

"Many top players inevitably carry nagging injuries from club soccer and they are analysed in great detail. Each match brings more injuries – knees, ankles, calves, and hamstrings all take a beating – some ruling players out for a match or two or more. Reporters want to know how the manager and the player are handling them and how they affect team selection and team play."

Today, May 23, the focus is on Liverpool star Luis Suarez who has just undergone an operation on his knee. Will he be ready to play for his home country of Uruguay?

Football: Suarez still hopeful of making World Cup after surgery

MONTEVIDEO, AFP – Liverpool star Luis Suarez is remaining upbeat after the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said that his participation at the World Cup "is not ruled out" following knee surgery on Thursday.

In an email sent to Uruguayan journalist Federico Buysan, and which the latter posted on Twitter, Suarez wrote: "I'm doing great and am ready to run. Thanks to everyone and stay calm, I'll make it".

Earlier, in the first official statement to come out of the Uruguayan camp after news leaked that Suarez would require an operation, the AUF indicated that the player had "suffered intense pain in his left knee" in training on Wednesday morning.

It was therefore decided that he should undergo "arthroscopic surgery to repair meniscus damage".

The statement added that "no other damage to the knee was spotted" but the AUF pointed out that the 27-year-old took a knock to the same knee playing for Liverpool against Newcastle United on the final day of the Premier League season on May 11.

Wearing jeans and a sports jacket, Suarez appeared in good humour as he left hospital on Thursday afternoon in a wheelchair.

The player raised his hand to acknowledge the dozens of well-wishers who shouted encouragement as he was driven away in an ambulance.

He now faces a race against time to be ready for Uruguay's World Cup campaign, which begins in a little over three weeks against Costa Rica in the northern Brazilian city of Fortaleza.

Experts said it could take anywhere from two to six weeks to recover from the surgery, but the AUF are remaining optimistic.
