Time travel with Google Street View
Google Map's popular Street View has added time travel as a feature allowing viewers to go back into the past and view how a place has changed year-by-year. Google Street View has been collecting images of places for seven years since 2007 and these are used in the new feature. (article continued below after video)
Some of the notable changes that can be viewed include reconstruction in Japan after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami. You can witness the construction of important landmarks such as the Freedom Tower in New York City or the 2014 Brazil World Cup Stadium. You can even experience different seasons and see what it would be like to drive through the countryside in Europe during the summer, spring, winter or fall.
The new feature has also been compared to a “digital time capsule of the world” or a "digital timeline of recent history." In the future the new time travel feature will allow you to walk through the memories of your old neighbourhood.
To use the new feature, click on the clock icon in the upper left-hand of a Street View image and move slider through time to rewind to the past or fast forward to the present.
