A lot of Bangkokians must dream about getting away from the city and living a relaxed, even sleepy life by the sea. Well, Kulphong Naknoi has done it.

Read about how he has set up a small seaside business in Prachuap Khiri Khan in this excerpt from a story from the Bangkok Post's Travel section: You can read the full story here: http://www.bangkokpost.com/travel/travel-feature/403147/a-real-seaside-retreat

A real seaside retreat

Small fishing boats moored in the shallows of the tranquil bay bob up and down with each passing wave. The bright sunlight is no deterrent for some tourists who roam happily along the beach, enjoying the occasional breeze as they wade into the turquoise-coloured water. A man takes an afternoon nap in a comfortable spot he’s found in the shade of a big banyan tree.

It’s another sleepy day at the seaside in Muang district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and while things get a bit livelier in these parts on long holiday weekends, the atmosphere remains laid-back and unhurried.

“Life is rather relaxing here. Though business isn’t exactly brisk and we have to be careful how we spend our money, I think it’s worth it to be able to enjoy everyday life as much as I do,” enthused Kulphong Naknoi, owner of a coffee bar and bike shop on Sue Suk Road, who said he has no regrets about leaving Bangkok a few years back to relocate to this southeastern province.

Hachi, an interesting little hangout on Sue Suk Road in Prachuap Khiri Khan town, sells delicious, home-made cakes and freshly brewed coffee. It doubles as a bicycle shop. The owner, originally from Bangkok, sells and repairs bikes and also organises two-wheel tours of the area. PEERAWAT JARIYASOMBAT

“Some days I close the shop early and go cycling with my kid along the beach.”

Taking the opportunity offered by the 2011 floods to flee the capital and fulfil a long-cherished dream, Kulphong moved to Prachuap and took over an old wooden house, a stone’s throw from the sea, that belongs to an uncle of his. He gets by on the proceeds from selling good-quality bicycles, doing bike repairs on the side. His wife does her bit, too, attracting customers with her tasty home-baked treats, percolated coffee and other drinks.

“My neighbours and I, we all know each other quite well by now,” he said. “So I can leave town for a short break, a week or so, and they’re perfectly willing to look after the house for us. This sort of thing [community spirit] is difficult to find in Bangkok these days.”
