Thaicom 6 launched

Thaicom Public Company Limited (formerly Shin Satellite Public Company Limited) has a brand-new satellite orbiting the Earth. It is called Thaicom 6 and it is intended to provide communication service to Southeast Asia, Africa and Madagascar. Its primary function will be to provide "direct-to-home" (DTH) satellite television service here in Thailand.

The satellite was successfully launched yesterday from Cape Canaveral, Florida by a Falcon 9 v1.1 space vehicle owned by the private company SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp).

As of yesterday, the satellite was undergoing manoeuvres to put itself into a geostationary orbit, meaning it will be travelling at the same speed as the earth rotates.  Thus, it will always seem to be motionless above the same location on Earth. This will make it easy for us here in Thailand to receive its signals.

You can see the official launch footage here:

This video, taken by an amateur about 3 miles away from the launch site, gives you a good idea of the excitement surrounding a space launch.
