The violence also left 26 other officers and 70 protesters injured.
The dead policeman was identified as Pol Sen Sgt Maj Narong Pitisit, 45, from Talat Phlu police station.
He was shot in the chest around 3.45pm, the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (Capo) said.
He was later pronounced dead at the Police General Hospital.
His wife, five-year-old son and family members arrived at the hospital and grieved the loss of their loved one.
Clashes erupted at the stadium at about 7.30am as anti-government protesters under the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand tried to break into the stadium's grounds to obstruct the drawing of the party-list candidacy numbers.
Most of the injured suffered the effects of tear gas, rubber bullets and were hit with unknown hard objects.
One of the protesters was hit in the head by a live bullet. His current condition is unknown.
At least four reporters and photographers covering the Din Daeng clashes were also injured yesterday — an ASTV manager and a Reuters photographer were hit by rubber bullets, while Bangkok Post photographer Patipat Janthong sustained a wrist fracture after being hit by a rock.

Caretaker Foreign Minister and Capo chief Surapong Tovichakchaikul said tear gas and rubber bullets were used against the protesters because they invaded and destroyed government property, which was in violation of the law.
The protesters also obstructed the election process, he said.
