SUKHOTHAI: A local businessman caused a stir when he paid 1.5 million baht for a rare 1.15-metre-long golden fancy carp, thought to be the largest of its kind in the country.

The 31-year-old, identified only as Bas from Sawankhalok district, bought it from a local carp farm.

The golden fancy carp, known among aficionados as "karashi koi", is about five years old.

Mr Bas said he decided to buy this expensive ornamental fish because it has such beautiful colouring and a fine body structure. Most importantly, such a fish, more than a metre long, is rare in Thailand.

Someone had since offered him 2 million baht for the fish, but he declined, Mr Bas said.

Panyawith Sueman, 30, the owner of the Sawankhalok Koi Farm, told reporters he has been in business for four years now.

He had imported fancy carp of various colours and sizes from Japan, with prices ranging from 3,000 baht to hundreds of thousands baht, Mr Panyawuth said. And now, 1.5 million baht.

He will sell fish only to those who really love them and are ready to look after them.

Fancy carp are becoming popular in Sukhothai and nearby provinces, where many people have begun to seriously study and breed them, he said.
